Coach Holly Warlick Teams Up with Legal and Medical Panel to Offer Real-Life Solutions at the First-Ever Cancer and Careers Seminar in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cancer and Careers and its founding partner Roche have joined forces with YWCA Knoxville, The Wellness Community-East Tennessee and breast cancer advocate Holly Warlick, University of Tennessee women's basketball associate head coach, to host an educational seminar providing practical advice and tools women can use when returning to work after a breast cancer diagnosis. The Balancing Cancer and Careers Seminar will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 15 at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.

"Work doesn't stop once you've been diagnosed with cancer. Many women have to -- and want to -- work during and after treatment," said Carlotta Jacobson, former beauty editor of Harpers Bazaar and current president of Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW), who founded Cancer and Careers when she learned that five CEW board members were diagnosed with cancer and struggled to find resources to help them balance their careers while undergoing treatment. "The Cancer and Careers seminar is designed to ease the back-to-work transition for these women by addressing the unique challenges of cancer in the workplace."

During the Balancing Cancer and Careers seminar, experts will offer useful advice and information on how to address a cancer diagnosis with employers and coworkers; what legal rights exist in the workplace, including an updated bill passed by Congress last month that expands the definition of disability; and how to inquire about effective treatments that may allow more flexibility with a work schedule.

"As oncologists, our goals include helping our patients to identify treatment regimens that will help them achieve the greatest sense of normalcy possible, which often means continuing to work," said Dr. Susan Huntsinger, an oncologist at University Cancer Specialists in Knoxville, Tenn. "Some breast cancer treatments, such as oral chemotherapies like Xeloda(R), allow people to spend less time at the hospital and more time at work without treatment disruptions."(1)

"I'm taking part in this important event because I want to do all that I can to show support for the thousands of women in Knoxville who are affected by breast cancer," said Holly Warlick. "My hope is that our community takes advantage of this amazing resource so they can be empowered to make more informed decisions about their cancer experience, and for some women that means identifying how and when to return to work."

In addition to Dr. Huntsinger and Warlick, seminar experts will include Cancer and Careers Executive Director Kate Sweeney; Knoxville Attorney Sonda L. Gifford; YWCA Knoxville Executive Director Marigail Mullin; and The Wellness Community-East Tennessee Executive Director Beth Hamil. Women will also receive information on local resources that can help them adjust to working through cancer.

For additional information and to obtain resources presented during the seminar, please call YWCA Knoxville at (865) 523-6126 or visit CancerAndCareers.org and AboutOralChemo.com.
