Lilly Receives Award From National Medical Association
Date:7/27/2009

INDIANAPOLIS, July 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) was given the Corporate Circle Partners award by the National Medical Association (NMA) at their 113th annual conference and scientific assembly over the weekend in Las Vegas.

Lilly has developed a long-standing, productive partnership with the NMA to advance specific issues facing patients and to address healthcare disparities.

"We can't do this alone," said Mohammad N. Akhter, M.D., MPH, executive director, National Medical Association. "As strong as the NMA and Lilly are separately, together we have greater impact in this country for the betterment of all of us."

Signature NMA programs such as the Global Health Initiative and policy shaping consensus panel are examples of the collaboration with Lilly. In addition, the NMA continues to actively participate in a Lilly diabetes initiative that serves to empower African Americans to overcome key barriers to success in living with diabetes, the Fearless African-Americans Connected and Empowered (F.A.C.E.) campaign.

Further, in an effort to increase the diversity of its clinical trials, Lilly also utilizes physicians involved in the NMA's Project Impact as clinical trial investigators. Project Impact encourages greater participation of African Americans in all aspects of biomedical research and clinical trials, including supporting African-American physicians in the process.

"We are honored and humbled by this noteworthy acknowledgment," said Jack Harris, M.D., vice president of the U.S. medical division at Lilly. "Lilly shares a common interest with the NMA - to come together to share knowledge that goes beyond medicine to improve individual patient outcomes."

National Medical Association

Founded in 1895, the National Medical Association is the nation's oldest and largest medical association representing the interests of more than 30,000 African-American physicians and their patients. The NMA has repeatedly advocated for policies that would assure equitable and quality health care for all people.
