Central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) chairman and chief executive officer Sidney Taurel today presented a $10.8 million check to the United Way, which represents Lilly's commitment to the agency's 2008 fundraising campaign. For the United Way of Central Indiana, Lilly's commitment represents nearly 25 percent of their 2008 annual campaign goal.

Lilly exceeded its financial goal by 11 percent or $1 million, while employee participation in the United Way program increased by 9 percent. The check represents the contributions of Lilly employees across the United States with a matching gift amount from the Lilly Foundation.

"The United Way of Central Indiana is committed to strengthening the support networks in our community that so many people depend upon," said Taurel. "Each of us has heard a story about how a United Way agency has touched the life of a Hoosier in need. By doing so every day they make our community a better place to live."

"I can honestly say that Lilly's campaign took my breath away this year as the results were coming in," said Ellen Annala, president and chief executive officer of the United Way of Central Indiana. "When our staff was preparing the weekly campaign summary I saw the numbers explode the week of October 10th and we had to triple-check our reports to make sure they were right. Each week as the numbers rose even higher I found it difficult to stop smiling. It was the first solid indication that we really had a chance to reach our overall campaign goal this year. Personally, it felt like the Super Bowl win all over again - I am so proud of Lilly leadership and the Lilly employees who offer their support to our community."

"Today's gift reflects the commitment of countless Lilly employees who are dedicated to changing lives, one person at a time, and also is a tangible reminder of what our company means to this community," added Taurel.
