Brazilian Pharmacy Association Honors USP's Roger Williams

ROCKVILLE, Md., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition of a long-term commitment to advancing public health, the Brazilian National Academy of Pharmacy (Academia Nacional de Farmacia or ANF) has awarded Roger L. Williams, M.D., the distinction of International Honorary Member. Dr. Williams is chief executive officer of the U.S. Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention, a scientific nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the health of people around the world through standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and foods. The ANF is a 72-year-old association dedicated to recognizing and advocating the highest standards of pharmacy throughout Brazil.

According to Lauro Moretto, Pharm.D., secretary general of ANF, "Dr. Williams is well-deserving of this honor. His extensive professional experience, scientific awards and achievements, both nationally and internationally, speak to an exemplary career that has been dedicated to the advancement of public health. We are very pleased to have Dr. Williams as part of ANF."

Dr. Williams was trained at Oberlin College and at the University of Chicago's School of Medicine. He served in the United States Army first in Korea and then at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where he conducted anti-malarial drug research. Prior to joining USP, Dr. Williams worked in academia and at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He is a board certified internist and clinical pharmacologist and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He received the U.S. Army Award of Merit from the Army and many awards
