Leading Expert Available to Weigh in on Health Care Reform
Date:9/9/2009

CORAL GABLES, Fla., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Steven Ullmann, director of Programs in Health Sector Management and Policy at the University of Miami School of Business Administration and nationally recognized expert in health policy issues, is available for media interviews on a range of topics relating to the debate over health care reform:

  • This is not a health issue, it is a business issue -- thoughts on reform: "We mortgage our country's future if we do not do health care reform," says Ullmann. "With no reform we will see health care prices increase two to three times the rate of inflation in this country and more falling on the uninsured rolls. Plus, there will be tax increases and more employers will quit providing medical insurance."
  • The shortage of primary care physicians and nurses resulting from insuring the 48 million uninsured: "If we add 48 million people to the insured rolls and have no significant increase in primary care providers, the newly insured may still be forced to use emergency rooms -- the most expensive form of medical care," says Ullmann.
  • An international perspective -- health care systems around the world and how they compare: "As it stands now, nearly one in five dollars generated in the U.S. economy is spent on health care," says Ullmann. "That is far beyond what other countries spend on health care and if we spend that much on health care there is that much less left over in our economy for everything else we value, whether it is having a home, going to school, having highways, going to a movie. Further, there are significant questions associated with the level of quality we are getting for all that we spend on health care."

Dr. Ullmann frequently appears on local and national television and is quoted in print as a health care policy expert. He is also a regular heal
