Sydney, NSW (PRWEB) May 20, 2013
May is officially known as Skin Cancer Awareness Month in the USA. Although located down under, Platypus Australia, the country's forerunner in fashionable children’s sun protection swimwear, commemorated ‘Melanoma Monday’ on May 6th to kick off their month long mission to bring skin cancer awareness to parents.
With the staggering number of cancer cases diagnosed each year, the public’s concern has led to feverish research to find out what’s causing the epidemic and how to stop it. The solution of covering up and applying and reapplying sunscreen while outdoors sounds easy in theory, but in reality, both tasks are a struggle for parents when their youngsters are at play.
In recognising the importance of being sun-safe, Platypus Australia takes part in the global effort to help reduce cancer rates by educating parents on how to protect their children from the sun. The company’s trendy children’s sun protection swimwear range is consistently rated UPF50+, the highest level of sun defence for clothing in blocking out more than 97.5% of the UV radiation. Moreover, Platypus Australia’s quality garments have received favourable reviews by parents worldwide.
The company's founder Ms. Karel Wheen says it’s important that parents recognise the increasing incidence of skin cancers and “take the right steps to protect their children and also teach their little ones the right habits for the future.“
Ms. Wheen acknowledges that whilst kids are the toughest to keep UV safe because they’re always moving about, she reminds parents that “when children wear something they think looks great and is also really comfortable, nearly half the battle is won because they’ll keep their protection on.”
She goes on to remind parents of a few simple steps to help defend against cancer:
1. If possible, avoid direct sunlight during the midday hours when UV is the most intense,
2. Cover up with UV protective clothing and swimwear,
3. Accessorise with a wide-brimmed hat and protective eye-wear, and
4. Apply SPF+30 sunscreen at least 20 mins before heading into the sun, and keep re-applying throughout the day.
Platypus Australia’s UPF50+ sun protective beachwear for children, which include a variety of interchangeable swimwear pieces and accessories for infants and toddlers as well, have been highly commended on public family blogs and forums over the years.
As part of Platypus Australia’s long time mission to prevent cancer in children, they’ve used May’s status as Skin Cancer Awareness Month to help push their message out to parents. Ms. Wheen asserts, “Remember, it’s through persistence of covering up and applying sunscreen that children will learn to do it themselves. It all starts with the parents becoming aware and then passing that onto their kids.”
