Latest Best Drug Rehabilitation Blog Post Looks at 6 Ways to Beat Addiction with Medication

(PRWEB) August 27, 2014

In its latest blog post, Best Drug Rehabilitation, which offers treatment programs and believes that having family close by during a stay in rehab can make a big difference in whether or not the process is successful, is looking at 6 ways to beat addiction without medication.

“While many people need medication to help them overcome addiction, particularly with respect to managing withdrawal symptoms and fighting relapse triggers like anxiety and depression, many others will be able to safely and appropriately achieve sobriety through non-medical means,” commented Best Drug Rehabilitation’s CEO Per Wickstrom.

According to Best Drug Rehabilitation’s blog post, the 6 ways to beat addiction without medication include:

1. Exercise: provided that it’s done with the approval of their doctor or other member of their health care team, exercise can help addicts by releasing “feel good” hormones such as serotonin, dopamine and endorphins, which can help ward off drug or alcohol triggers like anxiety and depression.

2. Meditation: whether it’s done in a spiritual context or simply as a way to relax and “decompress,” meditation has been shown to help lower blood pressure and boost both inner and outer health and wellness – which is a key element of becoming and staying sober.

3. Therapy: while we all need a “shoulder to lean on” from time to time, many addicts find that working with a licensed and certified therapist can be extremely beneficial. Furthermore, therapists can recommend additional support services and modalities to help addicts rebuild and reclaim their lives.

4. Support Groups: despite their best efforts, it can be extremely difficult – and at times, impossible – for non-addicts to truly understand the inner dynamics and intricacies of addiction. Fortunately, Support Groups can offer an invaluable level of compassionate, peer-based support. Plus, they give addicts the opportunity to help others and give back, which can be a big part of their healing process.

5. Journaling: even if they don’t consider themselves a writer, addicts often find it surprisingly helpful to keep a journal of their feelings, experiences, reflections, drawings, sketches, poems and more. Not only can journaling be cathartic, but it can shed insights that addicts can immediately use to guide them towards a sober life.

6. Hobbies: while using drugs or alcohol may have once been a choice, for addicts the blatant truth is that they are no longer in control: instead of using drugs and alcohol, they are being used by them; and typically, multiple times a day. As such, most addicts subjugate their entire lifestyle to feeding their addiction, and neglect to cultivate positive, life-affirming hobbies that would otherwise add enjoyment to their life.

“The key thing that addicts and those who love and want to help them need to understand, is that addicts are not in a position to self-diagnose their own treatment plan. Even if they admit that they have a problem and need help, they still need – and frankly, deserve – to meet with a qualified and licensed addictions counsellor or medical professional, and learn about the treatment options that are both available to them, and that could be best for them.”
