LAPD Singles Out Narconon Drug Prevention and Education for Special Commendation

(PRWEB) May 07, 2013

At a Granada Hills lunch organized by the Mission Community Police Council (MCPC), outstanding members of the LAPD Mission Division were recognized for their leadership and contributions to community safety. After LAPD officers, sergeants, detectives and clerks were given their commendations, Commander Sharon Papa called up Sigal Adini and Tony Bylsma from the Narconon Drug Prevention and Education. Commander Papa thanked Sigal and the drug education center for their work to prevent drug abuse in the region.

For more than a decade, the staff from this Narconon center have been providing drug education classes for schools, clubs and civic organizations in Southern California. In all, more than 400,000 youth have been reached with the center's message that there are better and safer ways to have fun than using drugs or alcohol.

Recently, Narconon Drug Prevention and Education sponsored runners in the Say No to Drugs Race and the LA Marathon. In all, 160 youth were chosen to participate in these races, starting their training months ahead of time. Comments from the youth revealed that they learned how to overcome personal obstacles by training for and running these races – valuable lessons for a young person who will need to make the choice to stay sober.

During the award presentation, Commander Papa said, “Substance abuse brings harm to every individual in every community whether they use drugs or not. Narconon staff have been effective and persistent in raising public awareness, understanding, and commitment to dealing with this serious problem.” The Narconon drug prevention organization was the only non-LAPD entity awarded at this event.

After the ceremony, Sigal commented that “It is possible to build drug-free communities if the youth of an area really understand how dangerous drug abuse is. Narconon is committed to educating them on better paths to follow, including making drug-free activities available to as many youth as possible. We look forward to many more productive years of cooperation with the LAPD.”
