Kwiksure Discovers Uses and Limitations of Vehicle GPS in Hong Kong
Date:3/13/2013

Hong Kong (PRWEB) March 13, 2013

The use of vehicle GPS in motor vehicles as a tool for navigation does not appear to be widespread in Hong Kong, as suggested by the results of a recent study carried out by Kwiksure. Incidents of people driving into swamps and even into the sea due to their GPS directions have occurred in other parts of the world but are rarely seen or reported here.

With over ten years of servicing the motoring population of Hong Kong, Kwiksure examines the reasons behind the less popular use of GPS devices in the region.

Originally a system developed for the US. Military for defense navigation, the technology has since been made available to public devices such as mobile phones and in-car navigation systems. These enable drivers to determine their position and obtain guidance towards their target destination.

Ken Chung of Kwiksure explains that “the busy skyline of high rise structures in Hong Kong can block the clear reception of the data transmitted by the satellites and so directions may not be as accurate.” In addition, Hong Kong does not cover a particularly vast area so the majority of people often do not require the assistance of a GPS, except for those who may travel up to the mainland.

Although Hong Kong is considered one of the safest cities in the world with low crime rates, the region was once plagued by a string of car thefts of certain vehicles which became a serious issue for insurers. These cars became difficult to insure due to the high risk of exposure to the insurance company and thus, drivers who fitted a GPS were more likely to be accepted for coverage.

Manufacturers added more features to certain vehicle GPS devices such as accident alarms and speed limit alerts. However, there are concerns in Hong Kong over data privacy associated with vehicle GPS in terms of who can access this data with or without peoples permission. If clients are worried about this and are traveling to somewhere unknown, there are of course alternative options such as updated ordinance survey maps and easy to understand road signs.
