Komen Travels to Democratic Convention in Denver to Raise Awareness of Breast Cancer Issues

DALLAS, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R), the leader of the global breast cancer movement, and its sister organization, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance, have traveled to Denver to spread their message about breast self awareness and the need for increased access to screening and treatment for the uninsured and underinsured.

Komen for the Cure's presence in Denver is centered around Komen on the Go(TM), a mobile experience that educates and engages people of all ages in the breast cancer movement where they live, work and play. The Komen on the Go cruiser will be located at the Denver Pavilions on the 16th Street Mall.

The Komen Advocacy Alliance is partnering with Komen on the Go to challenge candidates to make cancer a national priority. Komen Advocacy Alliance volunteers will be stationed with the Komen on the Go cruiser, gathering signatures for its I Vote for the Cure(TM) petition. I Vote for the Cure urges candidates to address three achievable goals that will save lives and help end breast cancer forever:

ENERGIZE RESEARCH -- Increase investment in translational research, which is essential to ensuring that scientific discoveries made in the laboratory reach cancer patients as quickly as possible.

INCREASE SCREENING ACCESS -- Provide every low-income, uninsured, and underinsured woman in America access to early detection by fully funding the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection program by 2012.

ENSURE TREATMENT FOR ALL -- Ensure that all women diagnosed with breast cancer have access to high quality treatment.

1 in 8 American women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In 2008 alone, an estimated 40,930 women and men will die in the U.S. from breast cancer. 2.4 million breast cancer survivors and the
