King Kullen’s Long Island Grown Produce
Date:7/30/2013

Bethpage, NY (PRWEB) July 30, 2013

One of the best parts of summer is enjoying farm fresh produce. Buying local fresh produce doesn’t just put healthy food on the table for families; it’s also supporting the local economy. King Kullen has been committed to buying locally grown produce from Long Island farmers for over 15 years.

Every summer and autumn, King Kullen purchases thousands of cases of produce grown on Long Island farms. The season begins in May and ends sometime around Thanksgiving. “Our objective is to provide fresh locally grown produce while reducing our carbon footprint, as well as preserving local farmland for future generations,” said Vice President of Perishables, Joe Forte. King Kullen also has signage in-store to promote individual farmers and the crops that they grow.

As an early adopter of the local food movement, King Kullen offers its customers the largest selection of in-season locally grown produce to be found on Long Island. The major crops for the season include lettuce, bi-color corn, cabbage, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, green squash, pumpkins and hard squashes.

King Kullen’s Director of Produce, Rich Conger hand picks the farms and farmers from whom the company sources produce. With local farms, produce has a much shorter field-to-table travel time. Conger said, “Product is typically picked up at the farms and delivered to the stores in two days as opposed to product from California that takes about seven days to arrive at the stores.”

Why is the locally grown produce movement such a big deal when these vegetables are available year round? While in-season, the vegetable’s flavors are richer, nutritional content is at its peak and because it’s local, it’s fresher. Not to mention the support provided to the local economy and how eliminating a costly trek from a farm a thousand miles away is better for the environment.
