To Commemorate Anniversary, Facility Announces $10,000 Donation and
Restroom Makeover Contest to Benefit Local Boys & Girls Clubs
SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Antonio manufacturing facility of Kimberly-Clark Professional marked its 30th anniversary today by announcing a $10,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio (BGCSA) as well as the creation of a program to help local Clubs teach children the health benefits of good hygiene habits. Both announcements were made during a dignitary event, which was followed by a tour of the plant.
The event underscored the importance of manufacturing to the local San Antonio economy. According to a recent economic impact study, in 2006, employees of San Antonio's manufacturing sector averaged a 13 percent greater salary than other workers in the area. Companies such as Kimberly-Clark Professional offer opportunities for local workers to be part of this skilled labor force.
"On behalf of the state of Texas, we congratulate the Kimberly-Clark Professional San Antonio plant for 30 years of helping to enhance the health of people everywhere," said State Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, District 120, who spoke during the event. "As an advocate for the improvement of children's healthcare, I would also like to extend my personal gratitude for their contributions to the community and for the health initiative the facility is announcing today."
Five students from the local Boys & Girls Clubs participated in a soap- making workshop and in the tour of the facility. Such workshops will be an ongoing part of the newly announced program, which will also include a restroom makeover contest among several of the Clubs in the San Antonio area. BGCSA student-members will regularly visit the plant for hands-on learning opportunities, and receive health and hygiene tips including guidance for proper handwashing.
"Working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio to help mark this milestone in our history is further demonstration of our company's commitment to caring for our customers, employees and our community," said Doug Sutton, manager of the Kimberly-Clark Professional San Antonio plant. "All of us at the San Antonio plant are delighted to make this gift and launch this new program with the BGCSA to underscore our commitment to improving the quality of life in our hometown and to helping to improve the health and hygiene of the next generation."
"We are grateful for the support we've received from Kimberly-Clark Professional today as well as in the past and we look forward to implementing this exciting new program," said Jim Watson, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio. "We hope this program will help build the foundation for a lifetime of health benefits resulting from good hygiene habits."
The restroom makeover contest will offer a $1,000 cash prize to the winning club. Kimberly-Clark Professional will provide the Clubs with paint, paint brushes, cleaning supplies, and new soap and hand towel dispensers. A panel of judges comprised of employees from the San Antonio plant will select the winner.
In addition, Kimberly-Clark Professional will work with the BGCSA to develop a handwashing and personal hygiene educational class to ensure that all local Clubs will have the curriculum available to serve Club kids and their families.
During its 30 years in operation, the San Antonio plant has been a
valued contributor to the community, donating hundreds of thousands of
dollars to various local charitable organizations.
Other interesting facts about the plant include the following:
-- Nearly 150 million gallons of liquid skin care products have been made
since the plant opened in 1977. That's enough for everyone on the
planet today to wash their hands 23 times!
-- The original Sani-Fresh 800mL bag-in-a-box liquid soap and dispenser
system, now an industry standard, was launched by the San Antonio
plant and helped revolutionize the commercial soap marketplace.
-- Seven hundred and fifty-six (756) days have passed at the plant
without a recordable safety incident.
In addition to State Rep. McClendon, several other local dignitaries offered their congratulatory remarks during the event.
Four special recognition awards were also presented to the plant's long- standing employees.
