Environmentally-Friendly Car Donation Program Extends Life of Used Vehicles

NEW YORK, April 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Those who can't march on Washington, pick up a shovel or save the whales this year on Earth Day can still do their bit for the environment by donating a used vehicle. Breathing new life into your old car is a keystroke or phone call away when you give it up to a charity such as the National Kidney Foundation, which runs the Kidney Cars Program.

Over the course of one year, Kidney Cars recycles 15,000 cars, a total of 60,000 tires and a staggering 30,000,000 pounds of steel. This Earth Day, the National Kidney Foundation wants used cars to become statistics and join the thousands who have gone green for the cause. Sputtering vehicles may revive the health of thousands suffering from kidney disease while helping save the planet at the same time. Donated vehicles are either sold at auction or parted out and salvaged. The iron and steel are then recycled to make new automobiles.

Over the last 25 years, more than 650,000 used vehicles have pumped a total of $150 million into life-saving programs, including free kidney screenings for those at risk, research, public and professional education and camps for children on dialysis.

The National Kidney Foundation is the nation's leading voluntary health agency dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
