Keep Kids Safe in the Water with 5 Tips from Amica
Date:7/24/2014

Lincoln, RI (PRWEB) July 24, 2014

Pools and beaches are the place to be on hot summer days. But the water can be dangerous, especially for small children, so Amica Insurance is sharing five tips to promote water safety.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children between the ages of 1 and 4 are most at risk for water-related injuries and deaths. It’s important to know the best practices for keeping young children safe around water, so Amica is offering the following tips from the American Red Cross:

  • At the beach, only swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards, and never let children swim unattended.
  • Do not trust a child’s safety to another child. Make sure that children are always supervised by an adult around water.
  • Have inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, but do not rely on life jackets alone.
  • Install a gate around pools to keep children from entering unsupervised, and remove access ladders and secure the safety cover when the pool is not in use.
  • Keep pool toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Pool toys often attract younger children to the pool.

Poor swimming ability, the absence of barriers around water and a lack of close supervision are all key factors in drownings. By following these five tips and always monitoring small children around water, you can help keep your kids safe this summer.
