Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit Names Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., as CEO

$23.8 million in research funding from the National Cancer Institute over the past 13 years. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, including articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Cancer Research. Dr. Bepler has received several awards and recognitions, including the Moffitt Cancer Center's Scientist of the Year (2008), American College of Physicians Information and Education Resource Editorial Consultant (2007 - 2008), and served on the Journal of Clinical Oncology Editorial Board (2006 - 2008). He holds seven patents.

"I'm looking forward to working with the talented and dedicated staff at the Karmanos Cancer Institute whose work I've respected for years," said Dr. Bepler. "I also look forward to serving in this leadership role, working with partners such as the WSU School of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Center. I feel very privileged to be part of the Karmanos team with its outstanding reputation, locally, nationally and internationally. Together, we will chart a strong future for the Institute."

Dr. Bepler received his medical and doctorate degrees from the Philipps University School of Medicine and Dentistry in Marburg, Germany. His postdoctoral fellowships were completed at the National Cancer Institute, Philipps University and at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Bepler is married and has four children.
