NCQA Reports Kaiser Permanente Hawaii's Health Plan has Highest Rates in the Country for Mammograms

Honolulu, HI (Vocus) October 9, 2009 -- Kaiser Permanente Hawaii leads the nation in mammography screenings, according to the National Committee on Quality Assurance's (NCQA) Quality Compass® report for 2009. The data provided by the private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality, found that among all reporting health plans across the nation, Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii has the highest breast cancer screening rate for women age 42 to 69.

"Our remarkable performance in breast cancer screening reflects a very strong commitment on our part to saving and improving our members' lives through prevention and early detection," said Executive Medical Director Geoffrey Sewell, MD. "We're all committed to making sure our members get the preventive services they need, and our technology helps us to reach out and encourage this important aspect of care. What being number one in breast cancer screening really means is that women in Hawaii who trust Kaiser Permanente with their care are less likely to die from breast cancer. That's something we're all very proud of."

The 2009 Quality Compass report showed that, of all reporting health plans, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii had the highest breast cancer screening rate in the nation, with 85.1 percent of women age 42 to 69, or more than 25,100 patients, receiving their recommended mammograms. The national average is slightly over 72 out of 100.

Kaiser Permanente's electronic medical record, Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect®, flags the record of any woman that is due for a mammogram. This record is accessible to Kaiser Permanente's entire network of more than 410 physicians and thousands of clinical support staff in Hawaii. When a member comes in for a visit, every clinical professional from the nurses to the physicians - even those in dermatology, ophthalmology, or any other specialty - can remind the patient that she is due for a mammogram.

Kaiser Permanente continues to proactively reach out to members who miss their mammograms with follow-up letters, reminders and personal phone calls. A recent Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research study published in the August 2009 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that a reminder program aimed at screening for breast cancer boosted mammography rates by more than 17 percent.

To further increase access to comprehensive care, Kaiser Permanente introduced its Mobile Health Vehicle on the Big Island this summer. It is estimated that the convenience of the vehicle will allow for an additional 4,400 mammography screenings per year.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has provided total health to the people of Hawaii for more than 50 years. Today it has the largest medical group with over 410 physicians supported by 4,400 nurses and support staff. Care for members is focused on their total health guided by our personal physicians, specialists, and team of caregivers.
