Jvion Releases Insights on Predictive Analytics in Healthcare
Date:8/6/2014

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 07, 2014

During the recent HFMA ANI 2014 conference in Las Vegas, NV, Jvion CIO Surya Vadlamani shared his insights on the state of predictive analytic and big data solutions designed specifically for healthcare providers. During an interview with the Healthcare Insider radio broadcast, Surya explained the complex and oftentimes confusing world of predictive analytics and big data. Topics include the definition of big data and how it is best applied within a healthcare setting; the key characteristics of a working big data solution that is tailored to the industry; and the cultural changes needed to drive adoption of these new technologies. The full interview can be accessed here.

“Big data has become a buzzword and there is a lot of confusion around what the term really means,” explained Surya. He went on to say that, “a big data solution fundamentally has to have the ability to consume a variety of data sources. There is an exorbitant amount of data within healthcare and as an industry healthcare has not been able to harness power of this data. The ideal big data solution is able to assimilate this information from disparate sources and deliver quick insights while remaining cost effective.”

Surya emphasized the point that hospitals are already over-stretched with mandates and tight timelines. They don’t have the resources needed to support the implementation of an expensive enterprise data warehouse that takes a minimum of 18-24 months to stand up, and they don’t have the luxury of time. Hospitals need the ability to use the information they have on hand to drive predictive insights while minimizing IT impacts. The best big data solutions, according to Surya, are those that balance speed with cost while applying new(er) technologies like predictive modeling to deliver meaningful, new insights that use readily available data.

Surya also touched on the cultural challenge of technology adoption within healthcare settings. “The foundation for big data and predictive analytic solutions has already been set by CMS (the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) through the establishment of quality-based systems. Providers have started looking for solutions that help drive quality while delivering near-term benefits in the form of saving lives and reducing costs. This change in the industry is helping bolster interest in big data and predictive analytic solutions. And as new value-based models are used by payers, hospitals will have no choice but to adopt such solutions”
