HOUSTON, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- JourneyLite of Houston, LLC has received Center of Excellence accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Program, making it one of only ten such recognized facilities in the state of Texas. This designation means that JourneyLite of Houston, LLC has met essential criteria that ensure it is fully capable of supporting a bariatric surgery care program, and that its institutional performance meets the requirements outlined by the ACS BSCN Accreditation Program. These accredited outpatient centers offer the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band procedure, also known as the gastric band or lap band, which is quickly growing in acceptance and practice as an outpatient surgical procedure to address the epidemic of obesity and co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. This is the only procedure that is performed by the accredited outpatient centers. JourneyLite of Houston, LLC is a state licensed, Medicare certified ambulatory surgery center in north Houston that has also received a three-year term of accreditation from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC) in 2008.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 2005, in an effort to extend established quality improvement practices to all disciplines of surgical care, the ACS BSCN Accreditation Program provides confirmation that bariatric surgery centers have demonstrated their commitment to providing the highest quality care for its bariatric surgery patients. Accredited bariatric surgery centers provide not only the resources necessary for optimal care of morbidly obese patients, but also the support and resources that are necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients, from the preoperative phase through the postoperative care and treatment process.
In order to receive the Center of Excellence (COE) accreditation, each facility undergoes an onsite verification by experienced bariatric surgeons, who review the center's structure, process, and quality of data using the current ACS Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program Manual as a guideline in conducting the survey. High-quality surgical care requires documentation using reliable measurements of outcomes. Consequently, accredited bariatric surgery centers are required to report their outcomes data to the ACS Bariatric Surgery Database. The JourneyLite surgery facility focuses on laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and is located in north Houston at 7007 N. Freeway. Practicing physicians at this ambulatory care center include Richard Collier, MD; Matthew St. Laurent, MD; Ata Ahmad, MD; Terry Scarborough, MD; and Sherman Yu, MD.
The dedication to quality and the management of effort necessary for an organization to be accredited is substantial. "Achieving accreditation demands a high level of dedication and effort and is important to JourneyLite. This accreditation recognizes the high level of quality care for our patients," said Dr. St. Laurent. "We are pleased that the American College of Surgeons has reviewed our program and found it to be worthy of this accreditation," added Dr. Collier.
