Joint Replacement Consumer Awareness Campaign Endorsed by Prominent Orthopaedic Scientist

Leading joint replacement scientist says the BoneSmart.org consumer awareness campaign extends the mission statement of surgeons and adds great valuable to prospective joint patients.

(PRWEB) May 24, 2009 -- Dr. Ian Clarke, medical researcher and founder of the Peterson Tribology Laboratory at Loma Linda University, has had a research career involving the wear phenomena of joint replacement bearings. He has joined the BoneSmart.org global consumer awareness campaign to help improve access to information for candidates for hip replacement and knee replacement surgery.

By providing insight into traditional and alternative materials used in modern joint replacement surgery, the BoneSmart® campaign empowers patients to learn about the options available to them for knee replacement or hip replacement surgery, and to initiate informed discussions about their options with their surgeons.

In his research, Dr. Clarke studies the wear performance of hip and knee joints using special joint-simulation machines. The materials he studies are at the cutting edge of today's technology, including the latest polyethylene, ceramic and metal alloys for hip and knee joints. The results of his studies provide surgeons and patients alike with information that they can use to choose the right materials.

He believes that timely information about current issues and latest technologies is essential to joint replacement consumers, and that the BoneSmart® campaign helps achieve this aim.
