While SmartLipo has swept the nation with its ease of use, the technology behind the popular fat removal procedure has leaped forward. Colorado plastic surgeon John A. Millard, M.D. is privileged to be the first in his state to offer the next generation - Smartlipo MPX™. Dr. Millard is also one of only two plastic surgeons authorized to teach other physicians how to perform this procedure.
Lone Tree, CO (PRWEB) July 9, 2008 -- Millard Plastic Surgery Center today announced it is the first center in Colorado to offer the general public SmartLipo MPX™, the next generation of the popular SmartLipo procedure for laser fat removal.
Patient Jamie Thompson, also of Lone Tree, was the first Colorado patient to undergo the upgraded Smartlipo MPX™.
"I used to run ten miles, three times weekly," she says. "But then, my life got real busy with marriage, three step-children and two, 180-pound English mastiffs. So I slacked off on exercise and my tummy got flabby."
Jamie opted to have fat deposits taken from her upper and lower abdomen with the new Smartlipo MPX™, which utilizes a combination of two different laser wavelengths that allow the procedure to proceed more efficiently, faster, and with far less bruising and swelling to the patient.
"I did not have to be put under general anesthesia and felt nothing after local anesthetics were injected," Jamie says. "No anesthesiologist was required and I had a little muscle relaxer just before surgery."
Says Dr. Millard, who was hand-picked by Cynosure, the manufacturer, to receive the first Smartlipo MPX™ machines: "Early results of the Smartlipo MPX™ procedure show that liposuction has taken a quantum leap forward. With this new body sculpting tool, patient swelling is almost non-existent, recovery is rapid and the device has the ability to tighten the skin from just under the skin while removing fat."
The Smartlipo MPX™ procedure is perfectly designed for Dr. Millard's world-class fat removal technique, in which he works in three levels, just under the patient's skin.
Cynosure selected Dr. Millard because he is a renowned surgeon -- known worldwide -- who specializes in Vaser hi-def LipoSculpture, a demanding procedure that removes pockets of fat in extremely toned, musculature patients. He also received the nod as a Smartlipo MPX™ trainer because he has been teaching advanced body sculpting via liposuction to other physicians for the last four years.
"Ideal candidates for the SmartLipo MPX™ are men and women from every walk of life who want the convenience of fat removal in a physician's office," Dr. Millard says. "If the patient arrives at 8 a.m., he or she can usually undergo the procedure and leave at noon feeling fine."
SmartLipo MPX™ removes love handles, fat deposits from the stomach, thighs, buttocks, and upper arms. Even smaller areas of fat can be removed from the neck and face.
Because the Smartlipo MPX™ system speeds surgery by using two laser systems combined in one intelligent instrument, the precise amount of energy is delivered to the treatment area. The system is also extremely safe; the laser shuts down within two tenths of a second after the surgeons stops moving the hand piece.
"One laser, the 1064 wavelength, has a strong affinity for melting fat," Dr. Millard says. "And it offers some heat for skin tightening." The lasers melt fat, which is then removed from the body.
The other laser, a 1320 wavelength device, heats water in the patient's tissues while melting some fat. The MPX lasers can be used together, in sequence or separately, depending on the layer in which Dr. Millard is working.
However in ordinary tumescent liposuction, the shallow layers just under the skin are affected by a much larger cannula that uses a powerful suction to remove fat, along with some other tissues. That usually means more swelling, bruising, and numbness, because some nerves are also removed.
However, the Smartlipo MPX™ is far more gentle. For instance, the tiny incision required to insert the Smartlipo MPX™ treatment wand is only 2 millimeters. Consequently, the surgical openings do not require stitches afterwards.
"The 1064 wavelength is also absorbed by blood, so the patient experiences less blood loss and swelling," Dr. Millard says. "That also means less bruising, loss of sensation and faster healing, along with a quicker return to the patient's normal activities."
For instance, Jamie Thompson underwent her Smartlipo MPX™ procedure on a Wednesday, and reported for work feeling fine two days later.
"Before the procedure, I was afraid of looking unsightly in a bathing suit," Jamie says. "But now, I'm looking forward to being seen poolside in a new two-piece!"
