Jeremy Shepard of North Texas Foot & Ankle is Now Certified Pedorthotist

Irving, Texas (PRWEB) June 17, 2013

The podiatry specialists at North Texas Foot & Ankle are proud to announce that medical assistant Jeremy Shepard is now a certified pedorthotist, specializing in the use of footwear and supportive devices to address conditions which affect the feet and lower limbs.

“We have a large shoe selection at our practice. I wanted to ensure that if patients were not able to be fitted for shoes by one of the physicians, that they were being properly fitted by a certified shoe specialist,” said North Texas Foot & Ankle podiatrist and founder, Dr. Ronica Holcombe, “Jeremy was enthusiastic in regards to participating in the course and obtaining his certification.”

Pedorthotist certification requires training specifically with an institution that teaches people how to apply corrective footwear and orthotic devices to patient care. Hands-on hours, study material, and a completion test is required to complete the course. Certified pedorthotists construct, fit, maintain and/or repair medical supportive devices such as orthotics.

Orthotic devices are shoe inserts which help return the foot to the neutral position it is intended to hold. Biomechanical, or structural, problems with feet can lead to multiple foot conditions including heel pain. A few examples of these types of problems would include over pronation, in-toeing, out-toeing, and either high or low arch height. All of these can contribute to or cause heel pain, and can lead to misalignments which cause ankle, knee, hip, or lower back pain.

A pedorthotist is valuable in the treatment of several foot and ankle conditions. Proper footwear is vital for patients with diabetes and also to increase mobility for people with disabilities. Pedorthotists can work with patients who do not have foot problems, such as athletes, by promoting foot health, maximum mobility and supportive footwear. North Texas Foot & Ankle carries a wide selection of orthotic footwear including Aetrex, Dr. Comfort, and Orthaheel shoes and sandals.
