Jasper Ridge Announces Standardized Bright Light for Testing Vision Performance
Date:11/4/2013

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) November 04, 2013

The VisionEdge™ Diagnostic Kit (VE-100DK) makes it easy to incorporate controlled high illumination in low vision exams. The small, bright, portable instrument is key to quick assessment of visual performance with the addition of intense light. Lighting is well established as a critical factor in restoring functional vision to people with visual impairment. The NIH estimates as many as 12 million people have chronic low vision conditions such as early- or mid-stage macular degeneration. “For many, bright light is a simple, cost-effective intervention to recover lost visual function,” said Jasper Ridge President, Dr. Peter Borden.

The VE-100DK includes both white and green LED illuminators, as many patients with AMD and other conditions respond even more positively to green light. “It’s a great diagnostic tool for low vision exams and rehabilitation programs,” said Dr. D. Fletcher MD, a world-leading authority on low vision rehabilitation.

The VisionEdge Diagnostic Kit uses patented, typoscopic optics to prevent hot spots and reduce glare, lighting only a band of text to suppress reflections. It is lighter (0.4 oz.) and brighter than most desk lamps and uses a rechargeable battery.

In a large study, Luminance in Acuity and Reading Performance of Low Vision Patients (D. Fletcher, L. Renninger, R. Schuchard; ARVO 2013), 140 patients had macular degeneration. This population saw an average of 2 blocks increase in a standard exam using VisionEdge™ lighting at high illumination, and an average of 4 blocks increase for the 23 patients with ring scotomas. The authors from California Pacific Medical Center, Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, VA and Stanford School of Medicine recommend the use of high illumination in low vision exams and rehabilitation.

VA studies by Dr. G. Goodrich further indicate that use of colored LEDs, as uniquely available with the VisionEdge, may provide increased comfort.

In a typical exam sequence using the VE-100 DK, patients read an eye chart in subdued light wearing the white illuminator. Then they read the same material using the green illuminator. If it helps, clinicians and patients immediately see the benefit. Then the vision professional can prescribe a VE-100W (white) or VE-100G (green) personal task light.
