A frequent complication in individuals with long-term diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, an eye condition that is the leading cause of blindness in adults of working age. One factor that contributes to vision loss is the accumulation of fluid in the retina of the eye because blood vessels in the retina have become more permeable. New data, suggesting that a family of drugs known as vasoinhibins might provide a new approach to decreasing the permeability in the blood vessels of the eye of individuals with diabetic retinopathy, has been generated in rats by Carmen Clapp and colleagues, from the Universidad Nacional Autnoma de Mxico.
