It's Here! Lockport Memorial Ramps up Siemens MR System for Local Community

'Win an MRI' contest winner provides in-house MR exams with the MAGNETOM ESSENZA

LOCKPORT, N.Y., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- After much anticipation and an outpouring of community support during last year's "Win an MRI" contest, an excited crowd of friends, employees and patrons of Lockport Memorial Hospital in Lockport, N.Y., gathered in the hospital lobby to hear those words they have been waiting to hear: "It's here!" At today's official ribbon-cutting ceremony, Lockport announced that its brand new MAGNETOM(R) ESSENZA 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system is now available to its patients and the community.

Lockport Memorial Hospital won the MRI, worth approximately $800,000, through a first-of-its-kind online video competition hosted on Siemens sponsored the "Win an MRI" contest to drive awareness for the lack of critical diagnostic tools, such as MRI, in rural and community hospitals. The contest invited healthcare facilities that met certain criteria to submit an online video and to showcase why their institution most deserved a free MRI system. After 1.4 million public votes were cast, Lockport Memorial Hospital was declared the winner with their video entitled "Is it here yet?"

MRI is one of the fastest growing imaging procedures on the market today, with the number growing by 10 percent from 2003 to 2006. Yet, more that 1,500 hospitals in the United States do not offer this valuable service.

"Previously, when a doctor at Lockport would prescribe an MRI to a patient, they would have to travel to an off-site facility to have the exam done," said Clare Haar, chief executive officer of Lockport Memorial Hospital, a 134-bed facility located in upstate New York. "But now, our new MR scanner is available to the entire community, 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The addition of advanced technology, such as high-field MRI, could also be vital to attracting healthcare specialists, such as neurologists, to these smaller rural communities. "We are so happy to give hospitals, like Lockport Memorial, a chance to open their doors to a new level of medical service and to better opportunities for attracting medical specialists to provide comprehensive patient care," said Jeffrey Bundy, vice president, Magnetic Resonance, Siemens Medical Solutions USA, Inc.

The MAGNETOM ESSENZA was designed to provide onsite MRI services to those facilities that otherwise could not afford such advanced technology or to increase their imaging capacity. The first installation took place in February 2008. Since then, MAGNETOM ESSENZA systems have been operating in various clinical settings across the United States ranging from small hospitals to large academic institutions.

The MAGNETOM ESSENZA is the most affordable, all-new MRI system available today. It boasts a 1.5-Tesla magnet and generates high-resolution images that will help clinicians make a more precise diagnosis and deliver improved imaging services in neurology, orthopedics, body imaging, angiography, cardiology, breast imaging, oncology and pediatric imaging.

Once installed, the MAGNETOM ESSENZA is engineered to perform at an optimal operating cost, which could save facilities as much as 50 percent on their MRI energy bills, compared to older systems. The lower power requirements are due to the reduced electrical load the system requires. The system's innovative cooling system also reduces AC load and associated costs. With its light weight (approximately 3.5 tons), the system's advanced magnet design helps to ensure maximum product uptime with a state-of-the-art zero helium boil-off magnet.

In addition, the MAGNETOM ESSENZA enables clinicians to boost throughput with the combination of up to four Matrix coils and Tim(TM) (Total imaging matrix) technology, which makes patient and coil repositioning virtually unnecessary. Another innovation included with the MAGNETOM ESSENZA is the IsoCenter Matrix Coil -- installed at the center of the magnet, so it is always in the correct position, providing a simple workflow solution that leads to outstanding image quality.
