It's Snow Joke as UK Gas and Electricity Bills Hit Record Highs -- Energyhelpline Calls for “Significant” Price Cuts
Date:2/19/2010

(PRWEB) February 19, 2010 -- Britons are facing record energy bills of more than £200 this month because of the cold snap. After one of the coldest Januarys in thirty years typical gas and electricity bills are set to rise from the usual £156 to £226 – a £70 hike.

The extreme weather means the UK’s 27 million households will pay out a total of £6.1 billion on their energy bills this month – an extra £1.89 billion. Energyhelpline, the independent price comparison website calculated the average household bill would soar 45 per cent as customers turned up the heating to cope.
For every degree it drops outside it costs more to heat our homes as the heat loss increases. Wind chill can also increase this as the cold wind strips our homes of warmth just as it strips us of warmth when we go outside.

Mark Todd, director of energyhelpline, called on energy firms to cut their bills to help hard-pressed customers.
He said: “This January has been one of the coldest for thirty years and now we are facing the highest-ever monthly bills. Wholesale energy prices have fallen sharply although this drop has not been reflected in retail prices.

“There is still scope for significant price cuts for both gas and electricity to ease the burden on hard-pressed households. A lot of people, especially the old, poor and vulnerable, were already be struggling to pay their bills even before the sharp drop in temperatures and they need help.”

The Met Office said the current cold snap is the most prolonged spell of freezing conditions across the country since December 1981. energyhelpline said the extreme weather means the UK’s 27 million households will pay out a total of £6.1 billion on their heating bills this month – an extra £1.89 billion.

Todd said: “This is a good time for consumers to review their energy supplier to hunt out the best deals. The cheapest tariff is currently £907 a year, a saving of £343 a year on the average energy bill.”
Customers attempting to keep their bills down can follow a simple three point plan:
1.   Keep your home between 18C and 21C – 18 is recommended for bedrooms at night. 21 for living rooms in the day
2.   Make extra special care to keep doors closed and close curtains at night remembering to not let curtains overhang radiators otherwise heat will go up the curtains and out of the window
3.   Keep as active as possible and wear extra layers to keep warm
