Evergreen Speech & Hearing Clinic presents a safe listening concert at the Kirkland Teen Union Building this Saturday

Kirkland, Wash. (Vocus) May 26, 2009 -- This Saturday, May 30th at 8pm, audiologists from Evergreen Speech and Hearing Clinic will join forces with musicians Daphne Loves Derby, Bad Timing and 4th Avenue to bring the message of hearing awareness to attendees of the fourth annual Turn It Down: an EAR-responsible Concert at the Kirkland Teen Union Building.

The Turn It Down Concert was created to demonstrate the importance of hearing health in a laid back and approachable format. "We want to let people know it is okay to listen to music and go to concerts, but it's how you listen to the music that counts." says Doctor of Audiology Terence Limb. "By giving youth the knowledge and tools to protect their hearing it is our hope that we can do our part to lower the staggering number of people affected by Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL),"

Currently NIHL affects over 26 million Americans (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders). Damage is caused by an overexposure to sounds in a sudden spurt or through long and/or repeated exposure to sounds over 85 decibels (dB). "An average concert can reach or maintain sound levels of 130dB or higher," says Limb. "At this rate, concert attendees listening for over 30 seconds without ear protection face hearing damage. This is an alarming figure, however, the even more alarming fact is that concert venues are not regulated like every other occupational or environmental situation."
