COPPERTONE Continues Legacy of Innovation with New Research on Antioxidant-Enhanced Suncare
KENILWORTH, N.J., May 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In time for warmer weather, Schering-Plough (NYSE: SGP), introduces COPPERTONE(R), NutraShield(R) with Dual Defense(R), a new line of sunscreens enriched with antioxidants to help promote natural skin repair by neutralizing harmful free radicals created by UV exposure.
Topical antioxidants can offer cosmetic skin-enhancing benefits when added to a broad spectrum sunscreen. During the course of research, scientists at the COPPERTONE(R) Solar Research Center discovered that not all topical antioxidants are created equal. In addition, the results of independent studies presented by the makers of COPPERTONE at a recent American Academy of Dermatology meeting show that exposure to sunlight can cause some antioxidants to become skin-damaging pro-oxidants. COPPERTONE NutraShield contains specially-selected antioxidants that continue to function even in the presence of UV light. Based upon the results of an ex vivo study, the formula is proven to reduce free radical formation by 74 percent in skin exposed to UV light(1).
In a clinical study conducted by an independent laboratory, results revealed that with daily use on the face, COPPERTONE NutraShield helped reduce visible signs of skin aging and improved skin elasticity, texture and clarity in as little as two weeks in women who showed signs of mild to moderate photo damage (premature skin aging).(1) By the conclusion of the 12-week study, women using NutraShield also experienced, on average, a 20 percent reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.(1)
"My patients want to help prevent sun damage and to keep their skin looking youthful," said Dr. Elizabeth Hale, Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at the
A growing body of research reveals that daily sun exposure during everyday activities can contribute to skin damage that appears as fine lines and wrinkles as well as certain types of skin cancer. In response to these findings and consumer demand for multi-benefit skincare products, COPPERTONE developed its NutraShield line -- an SPF 70+ Faces lotion as well as SPF 70+ and SPF 30 lotions for the body -- in lightweight formulas perfect for daily use to help protect and nourish skin.
"COPPERTONE has a legacy of continuous innovation to meet the changing needs of consumers," said Robert Bianchini, PhD, Vice President of R&D, Global Skincare at Schering-Plough Consumer HealthCare. "This year, we're offering consumers powerful broad spectrum sunscreens that also contain what we've discovered to be effective blends of antioxidants to help neutralize free radicals in skin."
