IntraHealth to Support Health Reform in Palestine

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --- Global Health innovator IntraHealth International will participate as a lead technical partner in a new five-year contract to improve public health needs in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. The project was awarded to Washington, DC-based Chemonics International and its subcontractors by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The new Palestinian Health Sector Reform Project aims to improve the health status of Palestinian citizens by building the capacity of governmental bodies, selected non-governmental organizations and educational and professional institutions to better address the region's public health needs.

"This contract is particularly exciting for us as IntraHealth recently worked successfully in the West Bank during a very volatile period in the Middle East, and was able to provide much-needed and high-valued development assistance," said Rebecca Kohler, IntraHealth Vice President of External Affairs.

As a subcontractor on USAID's MARAM Project from 2001-2006, IntraHealth assisted Palestinian organizations in providing emergency obstetric and newborn care for women and children by delivering equipment and training to health care workers.

IntraHealth's work under the new contract will focus on applying the performance improvement approach, a tool pioneered by IntraHealth to help stakeholders identify gaps in service delivery performance and design a plan to address those gaps. IntraHealth will provide clinical expertise to the project in the review, revision, and implementation of clinical standards, norms, and protocols.

Finally, IntraHealth personnel will be responsible for helping to establish a "quality culture" within the Ministry of Health, supporting the integration of a unified quality assurance methodology that includes the development and tracking of self-directed quality benchmarks used to judge the provision of qua
