'Interview by Internet' Can Decrease Greatest End-of-Life Fears: It Facilitates Creating Effective Advance Directives, Living Wills

CARLSBAD, Calif., April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Caring Advocates will host a free, interactive webinar on Wed., April 16, 10 to 11am PDT to demonstrate a new Internet-based technology: a low cost, convenient way for people to create, memorialize and implement Living Wills and Durable Powers of Attorney for Healthcare. Interview by Internet records patients' discussions of end-of-life preferences with healthcare professionals to establish effective, much-needed plans.

"People's greatest end-of-life fears are being forced to endure unnecessarily prolonged end-of-life pain and suffering, or years of lingering in a state of total dependency and indignity," said Caring Advocates' Medical Director, Psychiatrist Stanley A. Terman, PhD, MD. "Yet according to studies recently cited by the American Bar Association, only 29% of adult Americans have Advance Directives." The impetus to meld Internet technology with professional Advance Care Planning came in part from the predicted four-fold increase by 2050 of those who will suffer from Alzheimer's disease.

"Interview by Internet provides patients DVDs that depict their face and voice while discussing typical clinical cases with challenging decisions. It sends patients' doctors a document that transform patients' wishes into physician's orders that will be honored across treatment settings." The new document, called Physician's Orders to Permit Natural Dying, employs safeguards that err on the side of life, yet offers specific aggressive forms of Comfort Care. "We strive for final transitions that will be as peaceful as possible." This first of its kind comprehensive service for Advance Care Planning is available now in California, and will expand soon to other states.

The webinar date, April 16, coincides with National Healthcare Decisions Day. Dozens of events will encourage people to create Advance Care Directives. Those unable to attend Caring Advocates' live demonstration at 10 am PDT can view the video later, on line.
