Internet Sweepstakes Cafe's…Already Causing Impact on Gambling Problems in Florida

The popularity of Internet Sweepstakes Cafés has been steadily increasing over the past two years since expansion in the State of Florida. While the main focus for lawmakers has been their legality, calls to the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling’s (FCCG) 24-Hour Problem Gambling HelpLine document the damage to the State’s residents, regardless of whether they are legal or not.

(PRWEB) -- The popularity of Internet Sweepstakes Cafés has been steadily increasing over the past two years since expansion in the State of Florida. While the main focus for lawmakers has been their legality, calls to the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling’s (FCCG) 24-Hour Problem Gambling HelpLine document the damage to the State’s residents, regardless of whether they are legal or not. As Pat Fowler, Executive Director of the FCCG states, “The number of callers to the HelpLine already experiencing difficulties due to these Internet Café’s is significant given the fact that they are so new and there is no signage for seeking help available at these locations We promote the HelpLine number actively in gaming facilities across the state but that is not the case with the internet cafés, and to see the number of calls already coming in further substantiates the negative effects they are having on people who are gambling there.”

In just the past 9 months, the FCCG’s HelpLine has received over four dozen contacts from gamblers and loved ones who are struggling with gambling problems as a result of the Internet Sweepstakes Centers. Of these callers:
