Institute for Healthcare Advancement's Ninth Annual Health Literacy Conference Set for May 6-7, 2010 in Irvine, Calif.
Date:2/3/2010

Two-day event to help healthcare professionals with health literacy solutions for the 90 million literacy challenged Americans, including special social media workshop

La Habra, Calif. (PRWEB) February 3, 2010 -- The Institute for Healthcare Advancement (IHA), a not-for-profit healthcare organization and a national leader in health literacy education and services, will host its 9th Annual Health Literacy Conference on May 6-7, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Irvine, Calif.

The two-day professional, continuing education conference, "Health Literacy in the Real World: Programs & Solutions that Work," will feature presentations by leading authorities in the field of health literacy who will describe best practices for how to better present information to patients in a way they can understand. For registration information, visit the IHA Web site and click on Health Literacy Conference, or call (800) 434-4633.

One of this year's breakout sessions will include a special workshop regarding the use of social media to reach people with health information. Led by Elisheba Muturi, M.Sc., MLIS, of the British Columbia Ministry of Health Services, the session will explore the most prominent social media tools and how they can be used to collaborate and communicate public health information.

"Poor health literacy continues to be a serious issue in the U.S. We can make the system better if we understand and accept that it exists, use proven strategies to help ensure patient comprehension, and work to create a better match between demands of the healthcare system and the capabilities of our patients," said Michael Villaire, MSLM, director of programs and operations for La Habra, Calif.-based IHA. "This year's Health Literacy Conference provides an excellent forum for healthcare professionals to hear about solutions that are working and how we can more effectively integrate health literacy considerations into patient communications."

According to Villaire, the annual conference brings together some of the nation's foremost health literacy authorities and provides a forum for sharing innovations and the latest in research and study in the area of health literacy. It is designed for professionals working in healthcare or health literacy, health educators, as well as individuals with an interest in literacy as it relates to healthcare challenges.

Low health literacy is a problem that plagues 90 million Americans who have basic or below basic health literacy skills, which is defined as the ability to read, understand, and act on health information to make appropriate decisions. These decisions include understanding how to take your medicine, prepare for a medical test, sign up for health insurance, and care for yourself or a loved one's chronic illness, such as diabetes, asthma, arthritis, heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer.

The Institute for Healthcare Advancement is a La Habra-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering people to better health. It is nationally recognized for its efforts in health literacy and provides healthcare information through its various publishing efforts, the Internet, and its renowned local and national education programs. The organization is headquartered at 501 S. Idaho St., La Habra, CA 90631; 1-800-434-4633. For more information, go to the IHA website at www.iha4health.org.
