Infant Swimming Resource Self-Rescue™ Swimming Lessons Focus on Teaching Children Water Survival

Survival swim lessons add an extra layer of protection for drowning prevention

Orlando, FL (Vocus) May 21, 2010 -- Infant Swimming Resource (, the safest providers of Self-RescueTM swimming lessons for babies and toddlers from six months to six years old, emphasizes the importance of survival swimming lessons for infants and young children as an extra layer of protection for drowning prevention.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning ranks as the leading cause of accidental death for children between the ages of 1-4.

“As a private practice pediatrician, I have researched all available drowning prevention programs in an effort to make informed recommendations to not only protect my patients, but my own children as well,” said Dr. David Carr of Pediatrics Plus in Orlando. “All six of my children have completed the ISR program. I recommend ISR to every parent beginning at their child’s six-month wellness checkup. and continuing at every well child visit thereafter. While nothing can replace parental supervision for accident prevention, survival swimming is an extra layer of protection against childhood drowning.”

The ISR swimming experience is a four- to six-week program where each lesson is customized and tailored for every child as they are safely guided through the learning process. In addition, every parent receives specialized education about water safety and drowning prevention.

Baby Swimming / Roll-Back-To-Float - (6 to 12 months) infants learn to hold their breath under water, roll onto their backs and float unassisted.

Toddler and Young Children / Swim-Float-Swim - (1 to 6 years) young children learn how to hold their breath underwater, swim with their head down and eyes open, roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe, and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out. Once skilled, children practice these techniques fully clothed.

“We want parents to implement a Drowning Prevention Plan in their home that includes effective parental supervision, permanent pool fences, alarms, self-locking gates and survival swimming instruction,” says Harvey Barnett, Ph.D., founder of ISR.

Implement a Drowning Prevention Plan in Your Home:

Active Parental Supervision - Never turn your back on your child around water. It takes just seconds for him/her to be in serious trouble. Assign supervision responsibilities so there are never questions about which adult is responsible for watching the child.

Survival Swimming Lessons - Find a Self-Rescue swimming lesson that is right for you and your child. Self-Rescue skills are vital for infants and young children if they were to end up in the water alone. Instructors should have current CPR and first aid certification. Confirm that the instructor is certified to teach survival swimming skills.

Pool Fences with Self-locking Gates - Build layers of defense around the pool. Permanent four-sided fencing that encloses the entire pool area should be four to six feet high and equipped with self-closing, self-latching gates.

Pool Alarms - Install both pool and gate alarms. Effective alarms are not lifesaving devices, but they can alert parent to an accident, giving them time to act.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - CPR is an after the fact emergency management procedure. Learn CPR as an extra layer of protection, but do not rely on it to save your child from drowning.
