Increased Risk of Severe COVID-19 Symptoms Among Obese Individuals Highlights Importance of Weight Loss Surgery, says West Medical

A July 27 article on Reuters reports on international observations that strongly suggest that obese individuals are at an increased risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms. The article does not suggest that obese people are any more likely to catch COVID-19; however, because the same organ systems that the coronavirus attacks are already suffering from the adverse effects of obesity, severely overweight people are more vulnerable to additional symptoms. The article points out that obesity has long been associated with comorbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation across vital organ systems, and a severe coronavirus case is only the newest threat to emerge. Southern California-based weight loss clinic West Medical says that new information linking obesity with severe COVID-19 symptoms demonstrates the importance of working toward a healthy weight – and that there’s no shame in getting extra help.

West Medical says that, even with a strict diet and exercise regime, shedding dozens or even more than a hundred pounds, can seem impossible. The reason for this, the clinic notes, is that once the body becomes accustomed to a certain weight, it will fight to maintain that weight regardless of whether that weight is harmful. West Medical says there are several mechanisms at play here, including hunger hormones, that effectively hamper an individual’s ability to lose weight and more importantly, maintain that weight loss.

West Medical says that weight loss surgery can be a highly effective tool in the battle against obesity. There are several paths that patients can choose, each offering its own set of pros and cons. West Medical says that in fact, the number of options may even be a little overwhelming for patients but any good bariatric surgeon will be able to walk them through the options and recommend a treatment that best suits their needs. The weight loss clinic notes that among the more popular options are gastric sleeve surgery, which permanently reconfigures the patient’s stomach into a much smaller pouch-like shape that prevents overeating, and gastric balloon treatments, which temporarily insert saline-filled balloons into the patient’s stomach, also preventing overeating. West Medical notes that there are many more treatment options available and one suitable for nearly every prospective severely obese patient.

The Southern California clinic says that, with the global spread of COVID-19 and the increased risk of severity among obese people, there is even more urgency to considering weight loss surgery.
