In Northern California Bald Women Get Their Heads Together
Date:3/13/2008

egrow. The autoimmune disease is highly unpredictable and can start at any time of life. The cause is unknown. It's described as the body's immune system selectively attacking the hair follicle shutting down hair production. Characterized by smooth, round bald patches, it usually resolves on its own but can progress to complete hair loss. In some cases the entire head loses hair (alopecia totalis) and more rarely eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair can be lost (alopecia universalis). Some treatments restore hair growth in some situations, but new areas of balding can develop. Prior areas of hair growth can also undergo repeat shedding. There is no cure.

Chassin founded Bald Girls Do Lunch Inc, a not-for-profit 501c(3), in New York when she recognized that women with alopecia areata needed a way to connect with others regionally in fun, women-only meetings. Her degree in physical therapy from Columbia University brings both scientific and humanistic education to her non-profit work. As word of the lunches has spread, requests now come from cities across the US, Canada and from as far away as England and Australia. The organization sponsored the first Alopecia Areata Day of Beauty in New York City in October 2007. Interested individual and corporate sponsors for future events are invited to contact info@baldgirlsdolunch.org
