Iguana Selected for Department of Defense IHE Demonstration at HIMSS 09
Date:4/1/2009

iNTERFACEWARE's Iguana HL7 Interface Engine to be used to demonstrate HL7 interoperability for the Department of Defense's MiCare System at the IHE Showcase at HIMSS.

Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) April 1, 2009 -- iNTERFACEWARE is pleased to announce that its Iguana HL7 Interface Engine is to provide HL7 interoperability for the DoD's IHE demonstration of MiCare at the HIMSS Convention in Chicago next week.

Following on the heels of the successful launch of MiCare, the Military Health System's prototype personal health record (PHR) at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) recently, the Department of Defense (DoD) will be showcasing MiCare at HIMSS in Chicago next week. MiCare is designed to help members of the military and their families more easily and effectively manage their health and wellness, regardless of their location and as they seek care inside and beyond the Military Health System.

Initially the HIMSS demonstration was not intended to include interoperability with other systems. However, at the recent (February 09) Connectathon, the project stakeholders decided it would be preferable to demonstrate at least some integration with other IHE systems. Given the short window of time until HIMSS, it was important that the solution be robust yet easy-to-use, and a decision was made to use iNTERFACEWARE's Iguana product. As DoD developer and project leader Jared McCafree noted:

"I can honestly say that if I was coding this from scratch I'd probably still be working the bugs out of the solution today." He goes on to note that: "…we were able to stand up a working proof-of-concept in about an hour using Chameleon and Iguana and participate in several testing activities during the (February 09) Connectathon - which made our stakeholders very happy".

To support the IHE demo, the project group added some functionality to a new version of MiCare that uses Iguana to receive HL7 messages from the IHE ADT patient admission feed and, using Chameleon, writes fields to a SQL Server database. The group also created a 'quick enroll' mechanism that watches for admission records in the SQL database and automatically sets up an account in MiCare when Iguana adds a new message to the database. This shaves 5-10 minutes off the demonstration time, and allows MiCare to interoperate with the other IHE systems by using the 'real' patient admission information.

Notes Andreas Theodosiou, iNTERFACEWARE's Vice President of New Business Development, "We appreciate that our tools were selected for the IHE demonstration and that they helped the developers get up and running quickly and with minimal effort." At a time of escalating medical costs and constrained budgets, iNTERFACEWARE is glad to support all efforts like the DoD's to provide more effective health information exchange between patients and providers. iNTERFACEWARE is also proud that many prior and current IHE participants such as Alert, Capsule Tech, GE (Dynamic Imaging), Sectra AB and Philips use iNTERFACEWARE's products to add HL7 capability to their applications.

Recently, iNTERFACEWARE's integration software was deployed in a similar pilot project initiated by the North Carolina Health Information and Communications Alliance, Inc. (NCHICA). (Full story at www.nchica.org/Press%20Releases/NCHICA%20NHIN%20Demo.pdf ). The Pilot successfully demonstrated how access to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) enables patients to manage their health information and help physicians provide better care.
