Identity Theft on Agenda at Rocky Mountain Dental Conference

DENVER, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Identity-theft expert Bryan Thornton, director of information security planning for Denver-based idBUSINESS (www.idbusiness.com), a company specializing in information security tools for small and mid-sized businesses, will address attendees of the Rocky Mountain Dental Conference here later this week about new regulations aimed at protecting consumers.

Healthcare providers, such as dentists and physicians are among the non-financial consumer credit providers required to comply with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) "Red Flag Identity Theft" regulations effective November 1, 2008. FTC enforcement of the regulations has been postponed until May 1, 2009, partly in response to healthcare providers' request for more time to conform to its requirements.

On Friday, January 16, Thornton will explain specifics of the Red Flag Identity Theft regulation, including what is required for businesses to be in compliance and why identity thieves globally target U.S. healthcare practices to mine identity data. Thornton will speak to what is required for medical practices to be in compliance and why the US medical community has fallen behind in its compliance efforts.
