Hyland's Cough and Cold Medicines Remain a Safe and Effective Option for Toddlers and Young Children
Date:1/18/2008

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hyland's, Inc. wants to remind parents and caregivers that during the difficult cold and flu season, Hyland's homeopathic medicines remain a safe and effective option for alleviating their children's suffering from common cough and cold symptoms.

Today, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its recommendation regarding use of over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold products in children under two years of age. In its release, the FDA issued a public health advisory warning parents and caregivers that "OTC cough and cold products should not be used to treat infants and children less than 2 years of age because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur from such use. OTC cough and cold products include decongestants, expectorants, antihistamines, and antitussives (cough suppressants) for the treatment of colds."

It is important to understand that this advisory is specific to a list of drugs that are in the categories mentioned above and contain specific active ingredients. The active ingredients of concern are not included in any of Hyland's homeopathic medications.

A list of products affected is available at

Hyland's also offers Complete Flu Care 4 Kids and Sniffles 'n Sneezes 4 Kids to help alleviate symptoms in children over two years of age. All of Hyland's cold products offer children safe relief from the uncomfortable symptoms of the common cold and flu, such as sneezing, sore throats, cough, runny nose, headache and fever.

In the advisory, the FDA reminds parents of the importance of following the dosing directions on the label of any OTC medication and recommends that anyone with questions contact a physician, pharmacist or other health care professional to discuss how to treat a child with a cough or cold.
