Although the majority of us won't ever run a marathon in hot, sunny weather or deliberately allow ourselves to become dehydrated, studies have shown that water is a vital aspect of everyone's health. Guidelines issued in 2004 by the Institute of Medicine, a study group of the National Academy of Science, advised that adult men should ingest 16 cups of fluids per day, and women 11 and a half, either from water or foods such as produce. Research conducted by the bioengineering team at Quantum Nutritionals, LLC, suggests that the quality of what we drink may be a much more important issue than quantity, especially in our water-obsessed culture.

"When water does not effectively hydrate the body's cells, energy production suffers by a factor of 10 to 1", said Brian Foltz, CEO of Quantum Nutritionals. "The consequences are that for every 1 percent cells are dehydrated, cellular energy drops by 10 percent."

Widespread public awareness of the often overlooked effects of long-term moderate dehydration is generally credited to Dr. F. Batmanghelidj and his landmark "You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty" series of books. One of the earliest proponents of drinking adequate amounts of water to maintain good health and youthful vitality, Dr. Batmanghelidj's message that "you are not just what you eat, you are what you drink", has resonated with millions of people around the world. As a result, common complaints such as low energy, allergies, asthma, inflammation, digestive dysfunction, blood sugar imbalances, weight gain, muscle and joint pain, headaches, depression and other symptoms are today much more likely to be recognized as caused by fluid deficiency.
