He takes the reader on a fascinating, often amusing exploration of weight-loss diets through the ages, revealing how the work of pioneering physicians and scientists like Short, Pennington, and Banting--the Atkinses, Agatstons, and Siegals of their time--influenced his own thinking and led him to create his special cookie.

Dr. Siegal's weight-loss system and foods were originally offered in Canada through diet centers. In 2002, he allowed a Canadian doctor to open and franchise weight loss centers that used Dr. Siegal's name, six-cookies-a-day weight-loss system, and diet foods. His franchisee opened dozens of centers throughout North America (including Montreal and Toronto) under various names including Siegal Smart for Life Weight Management Centers. The relationship ended in August 2006, at which time Dr. Siegal stopped supplying his products to the company's centers. Dr. Siegal never shared his proprietary protein formula with his former franchisee.
