Middletown, NY (PRWEB) September 17, 2013
When surgery is determined to be the best option to treat an ailing child, treatment, the decision can be overwhelming for many parents. For the children, their fear can be a more challenging obstacle than the surgery itself. The physicians and staff at Hudson Valley Ambulatory Surgery (HVAS) encourage parents to obtain full understanding of the child’s surgery, remain calm and, very importantly, keep their child informed.
HVAS surgeons encourage parents to educate their child about their surgery, speaking about it in terms their child can understand and to answer their child’s questions honestly. Don’t keep the surgery or its specifics a secret; children are very perceptive and know when something is being kept from them, causing more unease.
Children take cues from their parents. If parents are confident that the surgery is the correct course of action, that the procedure will be a success and remain calm, the child is more likely to feel confident about the procedure and the outcome.
Comforts of Home
The day of surgery, bring a security item for the child. A favorite blanket or stuffed animal will help them relax.
Even adults have fears about surgery and children, who have less understanding, often have many questions. Being calm and confident, but also honest, will help lessen the mystery. If parents are at ease, it is more likely the child will be at ease.
"On the day of surgery, the surgical center staff will introduce themselves and parents should assure their child that the nurses and doctors will be there with them and give them whatever they need to make sure they are as comfortable as possible," says Virginia Feldman, M.D., HVAS governing chair. "Reassuring messages from staff and family add a personal feel to their visit and can help relieve the fear of the unknown."
Dr. Feldman recommends that if the surgery permits, parents should consider ambulatory surgery centers. “The atmosphere at an ASC is less overwhelming and intimidating than a full service hospital and we find our smaller patients appreciate that.”
