How ChopChop Magazine is Helping WIC Participants Cook More Healthy, Affordable Meals
Date:2/4/2016

ChopChop Kids, the non-profit behind the award-winning ChopChop: The Fun Cooking Magazine for Families has launched a second magazine, a special edition quarterly magazine for low-income pregnant and post-partum women and their infants and children up to five years old. ChopChop’s WIC edition comes at a time when access to healthy food has increased, yet still over 8 million families who receive WIC benefits are struggling to make healthy meals at home*.

“Our goal is to help WIC-eligible families feel confident about cooking affordable, healthy meals for their children” said Sally Sampson, Founder and President of ChopChop Kids. “We know it can be challenging to cook healthy meals on a budget, especially for mothers with young children. ChopChop’s WIC edition offers families practical cooking advice and cost saving tips created especially for participants in the WIC program.”

ChopChop’s WIC edition pays special attention to the nutritional needs and supplemental food opportunities of WIC-eligible families. Published in English and Spanish, each quarterly, 16-page issue offers practical cooking advice, ethnically-diverse recipes, cost-saving tips, and ideas for cooking with kids using WIC ingredients. Each issue also includes essential How-To’s, such as how to build a pantry on a budget and how-to gather essential kitchen equipment.

“When ChopChop WIC was presented to the local WIC programs, the managers all loved it and couldn’t wait to start using it with their WIC participants,” described Ann Barone, Chief of the Rhode Island WIC Program. “ChopChop has provided local agency WIC nutritionists with a revitalized sense of providing solid advice for parents in an engaging manner.” ChopChop currently has several state-sponsored programs for ChopChop’s WIC edition. ChopChop WIC edition is also distributed through many local and tribal WIC offices and clinics throughout the US.
