House of Brides launched its new website towards the end of December and in time for the wedding busy season, which begins in early January. The goal for the redesign was to improve appearance and functionality and create greater usability. The result is a clean, user-friendly site.
The website first launched in 2001. The site underwent several updates over the course of the next decade. However, the retailer decided the website was due for a major overhaul and began development in 2013.
Throughout the process, the retailer consulted focus groups to determine where the website excelled and where it lacked.
As Industry Consultant, Dale Buziecki states, “We wanted to develop a site based on our customers. We want to satisfy their needs and create a more efficient way to shop.”
The first task of the redesign targeted the appearance. The new design adopted a spatial layout and neutral tones to appeal to its nearly 99.9% female demographic.
The site’s search is an essential tool for shoppers. It sifts through the site’s more than 50,000 products to narrow down product choices. The retailer heard from its focus groups that the search was slow and did not always provide the correct results.
Developers focused on fixes to quicken its speed and improve its accuracy. They also expanded the search to find products by style options.
The last key improvement was to the site’s usability. The retailer worked on ways to enhance current features while introducing new tools. For example, the site now has an appointment tool, which allows customers to make online appointments for the retailer’s Illinois salons.
The site also has a Compare option. The tool allows the shopper to view selected styles in a side-by-side comparison including by price.
The retailer continues to make changes and additions to the site. It plans to consult focus groups again to ensure the direction of the site.
