Horizon Goodwill Receives Grant from The Community Foundation
Date:8/30/2017

Horizon Goodwill has received a $1,120.00 grant from The Community Foundation of Washington County, which will be dedicated to the tutoring of individuals with developmental disabilities and barriers to employment. Goodwill’s Chief Mission Officer, Catharine Fleming said, “Individuals can thrive when they chose to continue their education. It can help them advance into a better career path, and that is essential for long- term financial independence and stability.”

Goodwill will use the money to fund their first continuing education cohort drawing from students currently enrolled in their ten-day onboarding and job readiness class, Get Onboard!  Since the launch of the program in February of 2017, Goodwill’s Get Onboard! program has graduated over 125 Washington County residents with some participants finding employment during or right after completion.  With this award from Community Foundation, Goodwill will provide comprehensive tutoring for 10 Get Onboard! participants seeking get their GED.  In partnership with the Western Maryland Consortium and the Beacon House, the group will prepare to take and pass their GED exams.  The grant amount was matched at 50% by the Foundation for operating expenses.  By attaining their GED, Washington County residents increase their competitiveness for employment and can realize greater opportunities for advancement. “We are grateful for the generous grant,” says Fleming. “Thank you to the Community Foundation of Washington County for helping us advance our mission of removing barriers and creating opportunities. With a special thanks to the William Justice Family Fund, the benefactor for ensuring continued education and job training for Washington County residents with disabilities and barriers to competitive work.”
