Honor a Loved One at The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life

Luminaria being sold for Saturday night candlelight ceremony in Newark

NEWARK, N.J., June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- People from all over New Jersey will come together Saturday night to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who lost their battle with the disease at an overnight event in Newark.

Teams of people will gather on June 28th at Newark Bears Stadium and walk or run laps as part of the American Cancer Society event called Relay For Life. The event is held overnight to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps.

Luminaria are lit as part of a special nighttime ceremony that honors the people who have faced cancer, and remember those who have been lost. They can be purchased for $10 and can be lit on someone's behalf. For more information, call 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit http://www.cancer.org/relay.

The luminaria ceremony is being supported by a $5,000 grant from PSE&G, a company headquartered in Newark with a reputation for supporting New Jersey families.

Money raised at Relay For Life events support research, education, advocacy, and services that allow the American Cancer Society to offer help and hope to people whose lives have been touched by cancer.

The American Cancer Society is the largest source of nonprofit, nongovernmental cancer research funding in the United States. It fights for lifesaving laws to increase federal research funding, reduce tobacco use, promote early detection of cancers, improve access to care, and support cancer patients. The Society's services for cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and those who love them include transportation to treatment, peer support group programs, and resources for practical assistance.
