REPORTING NEW REALITIES IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC. Hong Kong, April 25-28, 2010. EastWestCenter.org/mediaconference

(PRWEB) September 25, 2009 -- Join the Asia Pacific Center for Journalists and local co-sponsor University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the East-West Center's second biennial international media conference.

The conference, hosted on the University of Hong Kong campus, is open to all media professionals. Build new networks and information sources among an anticipated 200-plus journalists and other professionals from the United States and countries throughout Asia and the Pacific.

This event will provide on-the-ground updates on news and media issues in the world's most dynamic region through keynote speakers, panels of journalists and other professionals, and media workshops. Participants can also sign up for a pre-conference study tour to Southern China and a post-conference excursion that will examine important issues in Hong Kong today.

  • Mr. Joshua Benton Director, Nieman Journalism Lab, Harvard University, working with the Harvard Business School to explore new business models for the journalism industry in the Internet age while maintaining quality journalism
  • Ms. Sheila Coronel Director, Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism, Columbia University; 2003 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for developing investigative journalism in the Philippines
  • Dr. Fereidun Fesharaki East-West Center oil and energy specialist; chairman of FACTS Global Energy; member of National Petroleum Council under U.S. Secretary of Energy; Dubai Mercantile Exchange Limited Board of Directors

Program Tracks:
 
  • Post-Crisis China: A look at China's economic performance and other developments in the wake of the global economic crisis; its relationship with the United States; its growing role in the Asia Pacific; and its increasing impact on every corner of the world.
  • Business as Usual? Lessons from the Global Economic Crisis: Will Asia Pacific countries move away from trade-dependence toward more focus on domestic consumption? This track will look at trade and economies in the region.
  • Pandemics, Climate Change, Energy Security and other Challenges: What role will the region play in climate change post-Copenhagen Climate Conference? How will countries handle the next deadly pandemic? This track will cover a variety of important and evolving issues.
  • Obama Policy in Asia/Regional Updates: Speakers and panels will look at politics, new leadership, security, terrorism and other issues in South Asia, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia; and relationships being forged in the region by the Obama Administration.
  • Searching for New Media Models: What business models will thrive in the Internet age? How will quality journalism be maintained? This track will focus on the new media challenges as well as the old ones that have faced journalists everywhere: how to report and survive conflicts, media censorship, expanding and improving coverage with shrinking budgets.
  • Media Workshops: Online reporting, investigative reporting, health reporting, covering China, social networking and more.
