Home Health Leaders Launch Alliance to Sponsor Research and to Educate Public and Policymakers on Sector's Contributions to National Health Reform
Date:10/28/2008

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Home health industry leaders today announced the launch of the Alliance for Home Health Quality and Innovation (AHHQI) to support education and research, and to demonstrate the value of home-based care to patients, their families and policymakers. The group is dedicated to improving the nation's health care system through high quality and innovative solutions aimed at achieving optimal clinical outcomes that increase patient independence and can minimize more costly treatment.

With the presidential race entering its last days and candidates for public office striving to articulate a clear vision for health care reform in the 21st century, AHHQI's home health leaders have come together to highlight for decision makers and the public the clinical innovations and cost-effectiveness that expanded home-based care models can bring to the nation's health care system. This initiative comes at a time when policymakers are grappling with a changing health care landscape in the face of rising costs and patient demands for high quality, innovative health care approaches. The Alliance intends to offer solutions that contribute positively to the debate and strengthen home health as a cornerstone of our future national health system.

"The home health industry offers a well-developed delivery system of high quality, lower cost health care services - one of the most efficient and effective systems that exists in health care today," said Bill Borne, Founding Member of AHHQI and CEO of Amedisys. "The Alliance will demonstrate the readiness of the home health care industry to offer this delivery system as a key component in implementing new and innovative initiatives to meet the health care needs of our nation, particularly for America's seniors."

In recent years, home health care providers have developed leading-edge models in care coordination, prescription management, disease management and behavioral education for patients. They have pioneered innovative and cost-effective uses of technology and therapeutics to deliver high quality, patient-centered, well-coordinated care across the health care delivery system, thus helping millions of Americans to live independently at home. AHHQI will utilize research to educate the public and policymakers on the benefits that home health care can bring to chronic, acute and prevention-based health care initiatives.

AHHQI has pledged to drive quality home health care through clinical excellence, innovative practices and strong compliance standards. Through research, education and advocacy, AHHQI will also work with policymakers and the home health industry at large to reduce inefficiencies in the current health care system and to drive new, innovative approaches to quality care.

"Leading home health providers and their outstanding clinicians are delivering higher quality care, controlling costs and helping millions more Americans to live independently at home," said Ron Malone, Founding Member of AHHQI and CEO of Gentiva Health Services. "Home health's growing record of innovation and its potential to contribute lasting, positive changes to our national health system has led our industry and its more than one million employees to step forward so that their solutions and contributions receive the full recognition they deserve from policymakers and the general public."

The Alliance for Home Health Quality and Innovation includes Almost Family, Amedisys, Bayada Nurses, Gentiva Health Services, HCR ManorCare, LHC Group, and National Association for Home Care & Hospice.
