PCU College teaches students to use natural treatments to complement conventional methods.
Burnaby, BC (Vocus) November 25, 2009 -- While surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are the standard, effective treatments in the fight against cancer, patients often turn to alternative medicine to help them cope with the side effects of conventional therapies. With an increased number of cancer patients using acupuncture and herbal medicine, it is important for health care practitioners to understand how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can complement conventional cancer treatments. Anyone interested in learning more about natural health care can look to the TCM programs at PCU College of Holistic Medicine.
“When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, they usually go through conventional treatments – chemo, surgery, or radiation – that can weaken the patient’s vital energy,” says Dr. Yang. “They’ll look for some supplemental health treatments that can boost their vital energy. It is here that TCM is quite effective.”
Dr. Yang, who also treats patients in PCU College’s clinic, explains that Western medical approach works by removing or destroying the cancer cells through surgery, chemo or radiation. At the same time, these treatments also affect healthy cells, tissue and organs, and create side effects that can make recovery difficult. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can improve, ease or reduce side effects like hair loss, low energy, sleep disturbance and digestion problems, as well as promote healing, boost immunity and improve quality of life.
Even though the duration and type of treatment differs from patient to patient, there are few side effects associated with TCM therapies. This is another reason Yang believes that herbal medicine and acupuncture can be combined with conventional treatments, especially in the early stages.
“Recovery from cancer takes time,” he adds, “but using both Western Medicine and TCM together is better than just relying on one approach.”
PCU College of Holistic Medicine is now taking applications for its Traditional Chinese Medicine programs. More information is available about PCU College on their website. Also, find the college on Facebook.
