HealthTek Software Solutions Licenses First DataBank's OrderView Med Knowledge Base(TM) to Streamline Medication Selection, Management and Reconciliation

Enhanced technology solution is expected to meet growing demand for

reconciling medications across the healthcare continuum and broaden

adoption of CPOE

SAN BRUNO, Calif., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- First DataBank announced today that HealthTek Software Solutions has licensed First DataBank's OrderView Med Knowledge Base(TM), a computerized physician order entry (CPOE)-ready drug database designed for medication ordering and prescribing. OrderView will be integrated into RxReconcile(TM), HealthTek's medication reconciliation software solution. The licensing agreement further deepens the relationship between the two companies and demonstrates the widening use and acceptance of OrderView in medication reconciliation applications.

"We chose OrderView to enhance RxReconcile because it is the only database that provides medication content that is physician-friendly and intuitive, which further streamlines the medication reconciliation process," stated Anthony Montville, HealthTek President and CEO. "The opportunity to decrease adverse events and improve outcomes makes medication reconciliation a critically important task and RxReconcile with OrderView, is an excellent tool for meeting that challenge."

RxReconcile is a point-and-click software solution that automates the medication reconciliation process. It integrates medication reconciliation with the orders process, and eliminates redundancy, reduces errors and subsequent adverse drug events -- resulting in increased patient safety, improved patient outcomes and a tangible cost reduction. HealthTek embarked on the development of RxReconcile in response to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' national safety standards requiring the accurate and complete reconciliation of medications across the continuum of care. The company expects that the enhanced product will broaden physician adoption of a technology widely acknowledged to prevent medication errors and improve patient safety.

Need for Automated Medication Reconciliation

Medication reconciliation is a process of identifying the most accurate list of all medications a patient is taking -- including name, dosage, frequency, and route -- and using this list to provide correct medications for patients by comparing their current list of medications against the physician's admission, transfer, and/or discharge orders at all transition points within a hospital. Reconciliation is done to avoid medication errors such as omissions, duplications, dosing errors or drug interactions.

First DataBank's OrderView Med Knowledge Base is the first product pre-built to help make CPOE systems more user-friendly. OrderView's "order-centric" design enables clinicians to specify precisely the meds they need -- easily, intuitively and without frustration. The optimized user navigation introduces drug content structured to fit within clinician workflow, making it easier to manage the important, but time consuming medication reconciliation process now required by the Joint Commission.

Additionally, OrderView's drug information content extends CPOE capabilities and promotes accuracy by providing validated dose and frequency selections proactively. Pre-built medication orders are tailored to physician workflow and support considerations like PRN reasons, special instructions, dose adjustments for organ impairment, mg/kg calculations, rounding increments, and pediatric and discharge orders. The selections also provide translation to discharge prescriptions and patient instructions, a place where medication reconciliation plays a prominent role.

"Preventing harm to patients from medications while improving care is our company's primary goal," said Don Nielsen, MD and CEO of First DataBank. "Medication reconciliation is an important task to ensure patient safety across the healthcare continuum and I am delighted that HealthTek has chosen OrderView to aid in this process."
