HealthForumOnline (HFO), announces a new CE/CEU course entitled A Review of Pain Screening Instruments for Medical and Mental Health Providers: Assessment and Coordination of Care of the Pain Patient to their extensive online library of nationally-approved continuing education (CE) courses for mental health professionals, nurses and allied healthcare workers. While there is an increase in the number of medical and mental health practiioners trained in pain management, many providers do not understand the ease and utility of gathering initial and ongoing data of psychological and behavioral functioning and the operationalism of findings for treatment planning. Yet, the proper assessment of the patient who suffers from chronic pain is essential for comprehensive and effective treatment. This theory- and evidence-based online CE/CEU course presents is a detailed review of assessment tools for the reliable identification of the patients' pain experience and its impact on activities of daily living and psychosocial functioning. Assessment results are discussed in terms of treatment coordination between medical and psychological providers. All of HFO's CE/CEU courses are fast, convenient and especially cost-effective as health professionals have free ongoing access to course updates beyond completion of the CE activity.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) June 2, 2009 -- HealthForumOnline (HFO), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, PSNA, CA-BBS) online provider of continuing education (CE) for psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals announces the addition of a new online CE/CEU course, A Review of Pain Screening Instruments for Medical and Mental Health Providers: Assessment and Coordination of Care of the Pain Patient, to the pain management category their extensive online CE/CEU resource library.

The National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC) in collaboration with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO) notes that "9 in 10 Americans suffer from pain and that pain is the most common reason for visits to primary care physicians." Some 25 million Americans experience acute pain, some 50 million live with chronic pain and pain accounts for the majority of long-term disability cases. The prevalence rate for chronic pain disorders has been estimated to range from 20% to 60%. For example, research has shown that an estimated 30% of the population experience low back pain and approximately 15% suffer migraines. Further, one national survey found that among patients meeting criteria for Major Depression or Dysthymia, 63% had co-morbid chronic pain conditions.

In 2001, JCAHO not only identified pain as a major health problem, but also highlighted the under-treatment of pain and its consequences. Under-treated pain can not only lead to other serious physiological health consequences, such as pneumonia and deep vein thrombosis, but can be associated with significant disability, under employment, absenteeism, and psychological distress - causing patients and families unnecessary grief and costing society an estimated 100 billion a year.

In light of these statistics, it is important that health care professionals understand how to identify and assess for pain conditions in their practice. Dr. Rodoletz, Co-founder and Director of Continuing Education, adds that "it is imperative that clinicians working in the pain context are prepared to individually tailor a comprehensive pain management plan and work within an interdisciplinary model" to facilitate coordination of care and overcome common treatment-related barriers on a patient-by-patient basis. This new online CE/CEU course will present health professionals with the information necessary to achieve these goals. Specifically, after completing this course, health professionals will be able to: 1) name common patient-based barriers to appropriate and comprehensive pain management; 2) articulate the basic components of a comprehensive pain management plan; 3) identify the best practices in coordination of care between medical and mental health providers; and 4) discuss the scope of the major, validated and reliable pain and mental health screening instruments and describe the recommended method of administration given patient characteristics (e.g. ethnicity, age, cognitive functioning, culture).

Psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied health professionals can now chose from HFO's 19 categories of topics related to health psychology and behavioral medicine (i.e., ethics, cancer adaptation, women's health, cultural diversity, eating disorders, reproduction/sexuality, aging/gerontology, pediatric behavioral medicine, assessment, chemical dependency, chronic/acute illness, clinical intervention, group therapy, infectious disease, long-term care, neuropsychology, pain management, spirituality, LGBT issues) containing over 60 courses available online or as downloadable, transportable PDFs. Health professionals can log on and complete CE courses at their own pace, on their own schedule, anywhere they have Internet access. CE certificates can be downloaded, printed and reprinted at any time to meet licensure renewal needs. Lastly, since HFO understands that busy health professionals need to have fast, convenient and cost-effective resources for state-of the-science education, we notify customers when their purchased CE course has been updated and enable customers to review these updates for free online even after they have completed the CE activity and generated their CE certificate.
