Many beneficiaries of UMWA Health and Retirement Funds depend on the organization to maintain their information in a secure system and often rely on checks from the organization as their only means of income. The organization determined that adding its own dedicated backup site for replicating critical information would not be cost effective and other vendors' data backup services required significant increases in bandwidth with large telecommunications expenditures. The TimeScale service required a 3 Mbps Internet connection compared to other vendor options that required a dedicated T3 service to back up and restore data.

Xiotech implemented the new service with little time commitment from the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds internal IT staff. A TimeScale Replication Appliance ran at the UMWA site for about two weeks collecting information regarding the rate of change for the organization's data and the transfer times needed to maintain replication. The system passed all tests and has run seamlessly since June 2007.

In the event of a disaster situation, Xiotech's TimeScale Replication Services offers two methods of data recovery: UMWA Health and Retirement Funds can replicate data to its existing SAN over its Internet connection for minor outages, or the organization has the option of receiving its data pre-loaded on a replacement Magnitude 3D storage system that can be shipped wherever the organization specifies, ready to install. The second option is particularly valuable in the event of a natural disaster.
